Birzeit University

The Birzeit University evolved from a small girls’ school founded in 1924 into the most prestigious Palestinian university and a leading centre of higher education, culture, and social engagement. Over the decades, it expanded its academic programmes, infrastructure, and international recognition, becoming the first Palestinian university to join the International Union of Universities. Despite repeated closures and pressures linked to the Israeli occupation, the university has continued to play a major educational, cultural, and societal role, attracting students and scholars from Palestine and abroad.

Birzeit University celebrated the graduation of the first class in 1976, the same year that the university joined the Association of Arab Universities. In 1977, the university was accepted as the first Palestinian university in the International Union of Universities.

Birzeit University entered the third millennium relying confidently on a legacy of academic distinction and its well-designed university campus, and winning several local and international awards.

The university remains a renowned seat of learning in local, Arab and international academic circles, attracting a large number of students and highly qualified academics in embracing the Palestinian people in their quest for freedom and statehood.

In its lifetime, the university experienced a series of serious conflicts with the Israeli occupation forces, leading to its closure numerous times and the arrest of its teachers and students. Even though, the university has continued to play its role.
