Recital for Solo Cello

From 11th to 18th January 2026

Church of Saint Anne, Jerusalem

From 11th to 18th January 2026, Maria Chiara Rioli (Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia), co-coordinator of JERUS-IT-ARTS, will conduct research in the musical archives of the Franciscan Custody in Jerusalem.

As part of this fieldwork, Maria Chiara Rioli, together with Vincent Lemire, will introduce the JERUS-IT-ARTS Recital for Solo Cello, performed by Lucia D'Anna (Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia). The concert will take place at the Church of Saint Anne, Jerusalem, on 16th January 2026 at 17:00 (Jerusalem time).

The event is organised in collaboration with the French Consulate in Jerusalem, the Institut Français de Jérusalem – Romain Gary, and the Franciscan Magnificat Institute.

The program traces the expressive roots of the cello—from early-Baroque ricercare by Domenico Gabrielli and Giovanni Battista degli Antonii, where the instrument first emerges as a solo voice, to the timeless depth of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite No. 1. The journey then moves into the present with works by Palestinian composer Mahmoud Abuwarda and Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom, which expand the cello’s sound world through themes of memory, identity, and contemporary musical language.
