Digital Archives: An Overview on Digitization

Lorenzo Ferrari – Research Fellow at DHMoRe

In this lecture, Lorenzo Ferrari introduces the fundamental principles of archival science, reflecting on the meaning of archives and their role in the construction and transmission of memory. Starting from a definition of what an archive is, and from the distinction between archives and libraries, the video offers an introductory perspective on the criteria that guide the organisation and description of documents.

The lecture then addresses the themes of inventorying and digitisation, presented as closely interconnected processes grounded in informed methodological choices. Through this reflection, the video provides an initial orientation on the transformations that digital technologies are introducing into archival practice, as well as on the challenges related to long-term preservation and access.
